"Underwhelming" Undertakings

A rather strenuous and laborious task involving a long trek from my dorm to a small "garden" area opposite campus.

Orchard and Pollinator Garden

After a distressing trek of winding through all of campus in the brazen heat of the day, I finally stumbled across the tiny patch of greenery that is the Orchard and Pollinator Garden. From our discussions in class, I whole-heartedly expected the "garden" to be underwhelming, disappointing, with maybe two flower blooms but a hell of a lot of dead plants. However, having been expecting the absolute worst, I was not only relieved to have found the location but pleasantly surprised at the variety of flora and fauna! It was small and unkempt and overgrown and in some areas, quite disagreeable to look at, but I really enjoyed my time over there. I found so many different things that caught my eye, pulling my attention from one to the other in an enthralling chase to capture as many notable pictures as I could. Where I discovered dead plant life or thorns or burrs, I noticed delicate flowers and new growth on the floor beneath the bushes. I understand why this was once named a garden, for it obviously was given tender care and thought and time. Now that it has been forgotten and untended to, I do not believe it makes it any less a garden. In Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel the Secret Garden, the garden was cared for and doted on until it was locked and hidden away for years. When Mary Lennox rediscovered it, she called on it by what it is: "a secret garden." She did not say "discarded land," or "natural area," or "landscaping," she called it a "garden." I argue that a garden may be called a garden if there was thought, effort, and care put into it at one time. Now that this "garden" on campus is overshadowed by the stadium, or the bus stop, or the stinky creek, nature has taken it upon itself to reclaim the land and allow for it to flourish without the confines of landscaping. And because of this, I had a significantly nice time. It's so similar to coloring outside the lines!
