A Dull Assignment Turned Enjoyable
For this journal entry, I chose a seed catalog that is near and dear to my heart: Wildseed Farms 2022 catalog. As many of you probably know, Wildseed Farms is located in Fredericksburg, Texas, which is a mere 20 minutes away from my hometown. Often on the way to/from Austin, my family would take some time from the drive to stop and explore the farms. My grandfather was an avid gardener, botanist, and horticulturist, and passed his love for gardening onto my father, who has then now shared it with me. Our yards in my childhood homes were always elaborate and neat, with well-tended rows of variety of flowers, bushes, and trees. With this in mind, our family visit to Wildseed Farms were not for the faint-hearted. After my younger sister and I were soon bored with exploring, my father spent an hour and a half (at the least) being enamored and indecisive over the countless seed packages or gardening tools, trying to create and map out his perfect garden and yard in his mind. My mother, meanwhile, was charmed by the wind chimes or avidly buying produce seeds for her side of the garden. Nevertheless, we always looked forwards to the experience and I have fond memories there.
So I decided: this is the catalog for me, no brainer. As I scrolled through the brightly depicted array of zinnias, sunflowers, and cosmos, there was something so nostalgic and sweet that came over me like a warm blanket. Not only was it calming, but to someone who doesn't know a lot about tending to a garden (other than just identifying plants) the catalog was so helpful and explanatory, providing advice for the upcoming seasons, finding the correct environment, and how to care for them. Sifting through the catalog was extraordinarily therapeutic, providing me with a little comfort of home...while being 100 miles away.
